About Sikkim University Sikkim University is a central university which was formed under an Act of Parliament of India on 2nd July 2007. It is located in Gangtok and is fully funded by the Government of India. The university campus is in its initial stages and is expected to be built at Yangang in South Sikkim district, about 56 kilometres (35 mi) away from Gangtok. The jurisdiction of the University extends to the whole of the state of Sikkim. While most of the major and well known universities are located in the mainland India, the university would be filling up the void of such institutes. At the same time it will also benefit immediate neighbouring countries, academically and professionally, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Myanmar, Nepal and Thailand. Students are admitted to the institute through all India entrance examinations held in 27 different centres in India and in Colombo, Dhaka, Kathmandu, Myanmar and Thimphu.
