Doctors of Chiropractic (D.C.) are primary healthcare providers as deemed by the United States Government. The U.S. Government states that chiropractors can provide all three levels of primary care interventions and are therefore classified as primary care providers identical to Medical Doctors (M.D.) and Doctors of Osteopathy (D.O.). As primary care physicians, they can provide referrals to specialists, when deemed necessary, and function similarly to family practice doctors.
In addition, Doctors of Chiropractic have a doctorate degree and traditionally, more years of education. A physical therapist has a very limited scope of practice while a Doctor of Chiropractic has a very broad scope of practice. Doctors of Chiropractic are able to be reimbursed for a variety of conditions by insurance companies and Medicare while physical therapists are quite limited.
