Today 16th april 2013 is the 160th anniversary of the first passenger train in India. It is also the subject of the Google doodle. The first plan for a rail system in India was put forward in 1832. The first rail line in the subcontinent came up near Chintadripet Bridge (in Chennai) in 1836 as an 'experimental line'. A 5.6 km long rail line was established between Red Hills and the stone quarries near St. Thomas Mount in 1857.
